Media Set is a service that allows astronauts to hold live broadcast events between the ground and space, using general-purpose software such as Skype and YouTube to easily communicate with people in space.
- ●The ICE Cubes Media Set enables real-time communication between crew in space and an audience on ground, as well as the distribution of video and audio to multiple locations around the world.
- ●Users can communicate with astronauts using only general-purpose videoconferencing systems, without using any special equipment or methods.
- ●The system has been used already for over 40 events since its commissioning in March 2022, with more being currently prepared.
The Media Set is built around a GoPro camera (live streaming: 720p, 3Mbps; recording: 1080p) and is connected to the ICE Cubes Facility, hosted inside the Columbus module of the ISS (across from the Japanese Experiment Module Kibo). The video and audio captured by the astronauts using the Media Set is transmitted via the ICE Cubes Facility and the ICE Cubes Mission Control Centre on the ground to a general-purpose videoconferencing system or a video streaming platform (e.g. YouTube). The conferencing system is used to provide audio from the user on the ground to the astronauts. Users do not need to prepare special software or communication methods, and can easily connect with astronauts for media, educational, inspirational events or for private conversations between astronaut and family members.

Examples of applications include public events, educational sessions, media interviews, astronaut work support, observation of experiments, and various other activities to interact with astronauts. Furthermore, when combined with AI-Box, it has the potential to provide real-time diagnosis by AI along with health observation of astronauts by medical staff on the ground.
The Media Set is also a testbed and a playground for the development of new solutions and capabilities, in view of future commercial space stations, as well as deep space exploration missions.
